I’m a big believer in taking my recipes and making them your own. 

This is especially true with my cakes and cupcakes. I often give you cake and frosting pairings, but you should just consider those to be suggestions or starting points. 

It’s the reason why I have so many different frosting recipes for you, from buttercream and cream cheese frosting to strawberry frosting and whipped cream frosting. 

And today I’m sharing my newest favorite: brown butter frosting. I’ll give you some suggested ways to use it later in this post, but I really hope you’ll get creative. Feel free to use it however you like and make something brand new with it – that’s really the whole point of baking, after all!

Sometimes I have to remind myself that there’s a world outside of homemade buttercream frosting. I mean, it’s so good that it tends to be my go-to frosting for nearly everything!

But every now and then I try to encourage myself to branch out and pair a cake or cupcake with something different. Sometimes it’s whipped cream frosting. Sometimes it’s strawberry frosting.

Today, it’s marshmallow frosting!

Maybe it’s because I’m fully in s’mores mode, thanks to my giant s’mores cookies, but this marshmallow frosting is totally making my day right now. It’s made completely from scratch with just a few simple ingredients and is so glossy and fluffy and perfect that it is a total dream.

Don’t be like me and get stuck in a frosting rut. You’ve got to give this one a try – one taste and you’ll understand why! 

WHAT IS MARSHMALLOW FROSTING?

There are two main types of marshmallow frosting that you can find online these days. One of them is similar to a buttercream frosting but has marshmallow fluff mixed in. 

The other is more like marshmallow fluff and is made over the stove with a few simple ingredients. The final flavor is just like that of a marshmallow, just without the solid texture.

It’s almost like if you make homemade marshmallows and the mixture stayed soft, instead of setting up. That’s what this marshmallow frosting is like.

In fact, if you wanted to use it like marshmallow fluff, you totally could. But I like to use it as a frosting and spread it onto my favorite cakes and cupcakes.

I love making frosting. It’s so much easier to make than people think and both the flavor and texture are way better than the stuff you get out of a can at the store.

People go bananas over my homemade buttercream frosting and it’s easy to see why. It’s just that good!

I don’t have anything against a good chocolate cupcake. After all, making my doctored cake mix cupcakes is one of my favorite tricks.

If you’re a baker and a parent, you probably know how birthdays are often a chance to come up with new recipes. You never know what kind of cake your kids are going to request, after all.

When my right-hand woman, Stephie, was preparing for daughter’s third birthday this year, she asked her what kind of cake she wanted. The answer? Pink!

We’re deep into apple season over here.

A visit to the apple orchard is a fall must around here. Even if we don’t have time to pick the apples ourselves, we at least have to run by and pick up bags of fresh apples for everything from apple crumb pie to apple fritter bread.

Alright, I’m finally almost ready to embrace fall.

Even though the afternoons are still a bit warm and humid around here, the mornings are starting to be nice and cool. With school in session and Labor Day over, it’s starting to feel more like fall.

So to continue to ease us into the season, I’m taking some of the last of my summer zucchini and putting in this zucchini cake with maple cream cheese frosting.

It’s a little hybrid of summer and fall, with the zucchini pairing with fall spices, ginger, and maple.
